I'm Back & Where I've Been

It's been six months since my last post. I decided to take a short break, not knowing that break would turn into a complete withdrawal from blogging completely. At the time, I felt a lot of my time could be better spent with my kids, my husband, friends and family, rather than trying to design, update and keep tabs on this blog. But lately I've had an urgency to write and share our stories with you. In the past six months God has done amazing things in our life, and being able to share it with you is not a chore, but a blessing. I intended this blog to be about our family and so it will continue. My posts may not be as frequent because what the Lord has brought before us will require more of my attention, so I appreciate your understanding. Thanks for coming back to visit and I hope you enjoy watching our family grow in Christ, each other, and life. Here's what's been going on in our neck of the woods...

JUNE: We found out we are having another little Shantine baby! Our due date was calculated to be January 27, 2014. This will give us an 18month spread between JoJo and Baby #3. Having two kids under 2 will be quite the challenge, but with Him, it will be possible.

JULY: The Summer seemed to start and come so quickly! We spent 3 weeks in Shannon's home town of Chicago and we celebrated Jojo's 1st Birthday Bash there. My mom and sister were able to fly in for the party, while Shannon's parent's hosted. It was a hot and humid but perfect for swimming. We loved seeing our family and knowing that it will be hard for us to travel with 3 kids, we made the most of our trip seeing and relatives at the party.

AUGUST: Tatum had her first day of school! Well, her second first day of school. She started Kindergarten and was so excited! She kept asking me if I notice how big she was. As she grows she becomes more independent and sassy. Since school started she has spend most her weekdays at her dad's house, and weekends with us, but she is just growing like a weed! As a mom I want to teach my kids everything, but it is them who have taught me some of life's greatest lessons. I wish I could stop time to really relish these moments of innocence in my children, but watching them blossom, learn, and grow is an immeasurable privilege.

SEPTEMBER: We found out the sex of Baby#3! As most men do, Shannon was rooting for another boy, but God had different plans for us and so in January he will welcome a baby girl of his own. I have a feeling Shannon will be cleaning his guns a lot more meticulously and frequent as she gets older. I, on the other hand, will be busy making bows and buying all things pink!

OCTOBER: At the height of Shannon's on-cycle training (13 hour work days), our October was fairly quiet. We started some nesting with buying a new crib, but we really just laid low as the reality of having 3 children sank in. When we found out we were expecting another baby, we were excited, but once we found she was going to be a girl, I feel like the actuality of it really started to present itself. We only had Jojo for Halloween and Shannon was able to come home for trick-or-treating, so we decided to take him to a friend's neighborhood to get some loot. He was a lion this year and surprisingly did very well in the snowsuit of a costume. Jo really enjoyed seeing the kids running around in the costumes, and although he didn't understand what was going on, he did enjoy his first piece of candy.

NOVEMBER: That brings us almost up to date! As you can see we've had an eventful past 6 months, but man was it fun! God is oh so good and this is proof. How appropriate is it that, during the most popular time of year for retrospection, I decide to come back to blog? Perhaps the urgency to come back and blog was not for blogging itself, but the Lord's way of saying, you need to take a deep breath and just look at all you have to be thankful for. All praise to Him! As our family approaches the holiday season, I can say that I will have plenty to be thankful for, not only for the past 6 months, but for so much more.

Boys & Their Toys

"Our houses are protected by the Good Lord and a gun,
And you might meet 'em both if you show up here unwelcomed son."

So as I was posting pictures from my last post 'Our Work in Progres,' I hear a loud clicking noise in the background. I look up and see my husband with his guns out, with all sorts of pieces scattered across our kitchen table. Meanwhile my 9 month old looks on salivating and mimicking the clicking noise with his tongues. I couldn't help but laugh. My husband is a U.S. Marine but like any God fearing, gun loving, red blooded American he exercises his 2nd Amendment, and with the world the way it is now, I have to say so do I'm happy he does. I know this may raise eyebrows, but to each is own.

I have to say there is no better peace of mind then God & a gun.
(Oh and it doesn't help that a cute Marine is my protector.) :)

Our Work in Progress

We've been moved in to our new home since February, so now its down to the finishing touches, so far this is what I've come up with. Pardon my dirty windows - in my defense it rained today so they aren't in photo ready condition. Also disregard my 9 month old's annoyed stares in the background.

These roses and my daughter's grass science experiment are the only live plants we have in the house- neither of my thumbs are green. (Again, please disregard my dirty windows).

That's my 9 month old son giving me all sorts of curious and annoyed looks as flashed the camera at his eyes a dozen times.

I think my favorite thing about this angle are the Photo Canvases! They were so easy to make and such a small ding to our wallet but such a big impact on our walls.

I've had many people ask me about our lighting fixture and Edison bulbs. We bought it Lowes for only $200! The Edison bulbs came with the fixture too.

Here's how the lights look all lit up. Call me weird, but I just love, love, love the industrial look even though I have bits of American and French country all over.

I know I've still got a lot more to do but, I think it's coming along nicely. We don't have much room to work with, so I'm trying not to get too carried away. I think all I need to do next is find a few more things for the walls and I'll be done! Stay tuned for more pics and updates, hopefully by this Fall I will have the house completely decorated.

Almost Summer...Almost

After Fall, my favorite season is Summer. Thankfully living in Souther California makes it easy to be close between both seasons all year long. Last week was so HOT and now this week is rainy. Regardless, these smiles always warm my heart. Here's a sneak peak of what my Summer will look like...

New Hair

I chopped my 12inches off my hair! Oh and I added highlights. LOVE LOVE LOVE, the cut, but not sure about the lightness of it. I'll most likely be headed back to the salon to darken it up.

9 Months

Our big guy is 9 months old this month! It is crazy how fast time flies. We are so blessed to have our beautiful children and thank the Lord everyday for their health, happiness and innocence.

Photo Canvas

I'm loving the photo canvas craze and I've been seeing them everywhere. I've seen a lot of DIY instructions for them, but with moving and trying to get settled I never got around to actually doing it myself. So... the next best thing was to buy one, but for the size I wanted, they can be quite pricey. So after shopping around I found that Walmart actually makes them for about $25 for a 16"x20", and the best thing, you can get it the same day!

I have a random, skinny diagonal wall in my house that was in need of some sprucing. All the art pieces I found were either too big or too small for the space, but these canvases worked perfect. I definitely suggest using Walmart's photo canvas options so start a mini gallery wall in your house; it's affordable and the quality is awesome! Check it out:

These are the pictures I wanted to display:

And after spending about $50 for both, and two nails, this is what I got:

I'm really happy with them! This is them up close:

Cheat Day

Shannon, (my husband), has been on a diet and today is his cheat day. We decided to surprise him with a favorite treat. Yellow cake, filled with strawberries and chocolate frosting. Man he's got such a hard life. Thank goodness he loves the box cake because this would not have happened from scratch. :)

Jo's New Helmet & MCLEF

Six months ago our son was diagnosed with Brachycephaly with Plagiocephaly. His head was misshapen from sleeping on his back, and delay in development. We were told, as his brain grew, the Brachycephaly only allowed it to grow in the path if least resistance- upward, which resulted in not only a misshapen skull, but brain. This made our son more likely for seizure, headaches, and cognitive delay as he grew. Our pediatrician referred us to an OT and cranial specialist, who prescribed him with a DocBand and months of occupational therapy. We of course, wanted to "fill his prescription" right away, but soon found out that Tricare sees Brachycephaly as a cosmetic issue- in turn, they do not cover it. Our doctors told us Brachycephaly and other cranial deformities like it is not cosmetic, it put our son at risk for dangers in neural development, The cost of a DocBand and the weekly fittings can range anywhere from $2000-$4000, per helmet. (If not taken care of early on, many children will have to be fitted for two helmets. However, there are also a lot of doctors out there that say, the neural dangers stated above are rare and that Doc Bands are usually for cosmetic issues- regardless we wanted to fix Jo's flat head). As frustrated as we were, we paid the out of pocket costs. A month after getting the helmet, a man approached me at the commissary and asked me if I paid for the helmet out of pocket. I confirmed I did and he proceeded to share his family's story of having to pay for two helmets. He then told me he would like to help us, and asked for my husbands contact information. Hesitant, I gave him my husband's email, and the man explained that he belonged to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation. He told me the MCLEF is a charitable non-profit foundation that has paid for 100 DocBands for active duty dependents and they, (as he put), "will not stop." After researching the group I realized my husband's was safe in the hands of former Marine commandants and officers. In a week we got an email from the man, (Colonel Robert Coates), telling us that with our medical receipts, they will send us a check in the full amount of the DocBand and any future uninsured care he might need. Two weeks later a check for $2500 and a letter from the president of MCLEF wishing our son and family well came in the mail. The only thing the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation asked of us is that we share our story with the military community and especially our fellow Marine families so that none of our children's medical needs to unaddressed. I was informed that members of MCLEF have addressed congress to reconsider the "uninsurable" pediatric diagnoses, including Brachycephaly, but until then if any Marine family needs help getting the necessary medical care for your child, contact MCLEF. Our son finished his cranial treatment a little over a month ago and is doing great. He still has some developmental catching up to do, but we're almost there. We could not be more thankful to God and MCLEF. So now as promised, I am sharing our story and letting you know about the graciousness of the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation.

Love & Respect

My husband and I started a new devotional written by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs called Love & Respect. We are looking to find the secret to a lasting and successful marriage and although there is no one definitive answer, we know there are tools which can help us make the most of our relationship. Love & Respect teaches that the principle to a lasting marriage is one which a wife receives "the love she most desires," while a husband receives "the respect he desperately needs."

So far so good! We are still in the early stages of the devotional but we have already learned so much. Perhaps the best thing we've learned is that God has already given us the formula for a successful marriage. It is not found in the pages of a single devotional, or in a weekend retreat with your spouse, but rather in His Word alone. Love & Respect breaks down Scripture to help you apply God's formula to a successful marriage. We are excited to be on this journey and we are so thankful that the Lord set this and His book in our hands. As we get further into our study, I'll update you on some of the things we've learned. For more information on Love & Respect and Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, check him out here.
